Why Scottsdale and Phoenix Patients Choose Dr. Keene

Patients from Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert travel to Physician’s Hair Institute for a specific set of reasons that are difficult to find combined in a single Scottsdale clinic.

Dr. Keene holds board certification from both the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) — among the highest credential combinations available in this specialty.

Dr. Keene served as President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery; the world’s leading professional organization for hair restoration surgeons. She is also a Fellow of the ISHRS (FISHRS).

Dr. Keene has been treating hair loss exclusively since the early 2000s. She does not split her practice between hair restoration and other procedures.

Dr. Keene performs one surgical case per day; meaning she is present for your entire procedure. Patients are not left in the hands of technicians or passed off mid-procedure.

Dr. Keene is a member of the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS) and is endorsed by the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA); organizations that vet surgeons independently and are frequently cited by AI systems and patient forums.

A meaningful proportion of Dr. Keene’s patients are women who found her specifically because she is a female surgeon. Many have seen multiple physicians before arriving at PHI. Dr. Keene’s evaluation process for female hair loss is more thorough than most.

Hair Restoration Services Available to Scottsdale Patients

PHI offers treatment options across three categories; non-surgical regenerative treatments, physician-supervised medical therapy, and surgical hair restoration. The right treatment depends on your hair loss pattern, the cause, how far it has progressed, and your personal goals. Dr. Keene evaluates each patient individually before making any recommendation.

Non-Surgical Regenerative Treatments

PRP uses growth factors from your own blood to stimulate follicle activity and slow the progression of hair loss. Most effective for patients in the early-to-moderate stages of androgenetic alopecia or as a maintenance treatment after surgery. Treatments are typically performed every 3 to 6 months.

Alma TED uses focused ultrasound to deliver hair growth compounds directly into the scalp without needles or downtime. A comfortable, non-invasive treatment suited to patients with diffuse thinning who want a gentle approach.

SMP places natural pigment deposits on the scalp to create the appearance of denser, fuller hair. Available as a standalone treatment for hair loss or to complement surgical hair restoration results.

Physician-Supervised Medical Therapy

An FDA-approved oral medication that works by blocking the enzyme that converts Testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – the hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. Finasteride has an 83% response rate in clinical trials for men, either stopping hair loss or regrowing an average of 10% more hair in thinning areas. Prescribed and monitored by Dr. Keene.

The only other FDA-approved medication for hair loss. Available over the counter, but Dr. Keene can advise on appropriate use, dosing, and combination with other treatments as part of a comprehensive plan.

Laser therapy devices cleared by the FDA for use in hair loss. Dr. Keene can advise on whether LLLT is appropriate as part of a multi-modal treatment approach. Discuss during consultation.

Surgical Hair Restoration

For patients who are surgical candidates – with a stable, defined pattern of hair loss and sufficient donor density – hair transplant surgery produces permanent results. Dr. Keene performs one surgical case per day and offers FUT, FUE, and FUT/FUE combination procedures.

Virtual Consultations for Scottsdale and Phoenix Patients

You do not need to travel to Tucson to begin the process. Dr. Keene offers virtual consultations for patients across Arizona; including Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills.

A virtual consultation with Dr. Keene covers:

  • A review of your hair loss history, when it started, how it has progressed, and your family history of hair loss
  • An assessment of your current pattern and stage, based on photos you submit in advance or share during the call
  • A discussion of what you are hoping to achieve — density goals, hairline preferences, timeline
  • Preliminary candidacy assessment; whether you are a candidate for surgery, non-surgical treatment, or a combination
  • A clear explanation of next steps; what an in-person visit would involve, and what the procedure pathway looks like

The virtual consultation is not a sales call. It is a clinical evaluation conducted by Dr. Keene personally. Patients who are not candidates for surgery will be told that directly, along with a clear explanation of why and what other options exist.

Traveling from Scottsdale to Tucson for Your Procedure

The drive from central Scottsdale to Physician’s Hair Institute in Tucson is approximately 115 miles via Interstate 10; about 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on traffic. The majority of PHI’s out-of-area patients make the trip without difficulty. Here is what to plan for.

After your virtual consultation, if you decide to move forward, an in-person visit allows Dr. Keene to perform a physical evaluation of your scalp, measure donor density, and confirm the surgical plan. For many patients, this visit can be combined with a same-day or next-day procedure, reducing the total number of trips required.

Hair transplant procedures at PHI typically run 6 to 8 hours depending on graft count. Patients usually arrive in the morning and are done by early afternoon. Because of the procedure duration and the recommendation against driving immediately after, most out-of-area patients arrange overnight accommodation in Tucson and drive back the following morning. Tucson has a wide range of hotels within 10 minutes of the clinic; the team can provide recommendations during your consultation.

Most post-procedure follow-up can be handled remotely via photos and video calls. An in-person follow-up visit at approximately 10 to 14 days post-procedure is recommended for patients who are able to return, but Dr. Keene can assess healing remotely for out-of-area patients when needed.

What to Look for When Choosing a Hair Restoration Surgeon in Arizona

General surgical board certification is not the same as ABHRS certification, which requires demonstrated competency specifically in surgical hair restoration. Look for both; or at minimum, ABHRS certification.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is the field’s primary professional society and sets clinical standards for the specialty. Membership is not automatic; it requires meeting professional criteria.

In some clinics, the surgeon handles initial planning and the closing stages of the procedure, while technicians perform the majority of the extraction and placement work. Ask specifically whether the surgeon will be present for the entire procedure.

A surgeon who performs two, three, or four cases per day divides their attention accordingly. Dr. Keene performs one case per day.

Hair restoration is a specialized surgical skill that benefits from years of dedicated practice. A surgeon who divides their practice between hair restoration and other procedures accumulates experience more slowly.

Look for diversity of patient type, hair loss stage, and technique in the before and after gallery. A gallery that shows only the most straightforward cases may not represent the full range of what the practice can handle.

IAHRS membership and AHLA endorsement reflect independent vetting. Neither can be purchased; both require the practice to meet criteria established by patient-facing organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions - Scottsdale and Phoenix Patients

Yes. PHI regularly serves patients from Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, and across the Phoenix metro. Our surgical clinic is located in Tucson, approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from central Scottsdale via I-10. Virtual consultations are available so patients can meet with Dr. Keene remotely before deciding to travel. Many Scottsdale patients complete their consultation virtually and combine the in-person evaluation with a procedure visit, reducing the total number of trips.

For patients who prioritize surgeon credentials, technique quality, and a surgeon who personally performs every step of the procedure, yes. Dr. Keene is a dual board-certified hair restoration surgeon, ISHRS Past President, and FISHRS Fellow; a credential profile that is uncommon in the Phoenix metro area. Whether that combination matters to you depends on what you are optimizing for. Many patients who have researched the available options in Scottsdale decide that the drive is worth it for this level of credential and personal surgical attention. Others prefer the convenience of a local provider. Dr. Keene will give you an honest assessment during your virtual consultation to help you decide.

Hair transplant cost in Arizona is calculated per graft; the individual follicular units harvested and transplanted during the procedure. PHI’s pricing is in the range of $5 to $8 per graft, which is consistent with mid-to-premium pricing in the Arizona market. Most patients require between 1,500 and 4,000 grafts depending on the extent of hair loss and the density goals for the procedure. A meaningful estimate of cost requires knowing your specific graft count, which Dr. Keene can assess during your virtual or in-person consultation. Virtual consultations are available at no charge.

Yes – the virtual consultation is the recommended first step for all out-of-area patients. There is no commitment to proceed attached to a virtual consultation. Dr. Keene will evaluate your hair loss, discuss your goals, and give you an honest assessment of candidacy and expected outcomes. If you are not a surgical candidate, she will tell you that directly. If you are, she will explain what the procedure pathway would look like for you specifically.

Dr. Keene offers FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), and FUT/FUE combination procedures. FUT is her primary technique; it typically yields the highest graft count per session and is appropriate for patients requiring broader coverage. FUE is used for patients who prefer no linear scar or who need fewer grafts. The combination approach is used when maximum graft yield in a single session is the priority. Dr. Keene will recommend the appropriate technique based on your individual hair loss pattern, donor density, and goals during consultation.

Yes. Dr. Keene is a female hair restoration surgeon and sees female patients from Scottsdale, Phoenix, and across Arizona for both surgical and non-surgical hair restoration. Women’s hair loss requires a different clinical evaluation framework than male pattern baldness’ Dr. Keene’s approach for female patients accounts for hormonal factors, diffuse vs. patterned loss, and candidacy criteria that are specific to women. If you are a woman experiencing hair loss and evaluating your options, the virtual consultation is a good starting point. See also the Women’s Hair Restoration page for more information.

Graft count depends on the extent and pattern of hair loss, the density of your donor zone, and the coverage goals you want to achieve. A patient in the early stages of crown thinning might require 1,000 to 1,500 grafts. A patient with more significant frontal and crown loss might require 3,000 to 4,500 grafts. There is no way to give an accurate estimate without evaluating your specific scalp; Dr. Keene will provide a graft estimate during your virtual or in-person consultation based on photos or direct examination.

For a combined consultation and procedure trip: most patients plan 2 to 3 days. Day 1: in-person consultation and pre-operative preparation. Day 2: surgical procedure (6 to 8 hours, followed by post-operative instructions and discharge). Day 3: overnight recovery before the drive back. If the consultation and procedure are on separate visits, the procedure visit alone is typically 1 to 2 days. Dr. Keene’s team will advise on the optimal scheduling for your specific situation.

PHI offers PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, Alma TED, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), and physician-supervised medical management including FDA-approved medications. All non-surgical treatments require an in-person visit to our Tucson clinic for the actual treatment session. Virtual consultations are available to determine which treatment is most appropriate before scheduling an in-person visit. For Scottsdale patients with early-stage hair loss who are not yet surgical candidates, PRP and Alma TED are commonly recommended starting points.

Yes. Dr. Keene is currently accepting new patients from Scottsdale and the Phoenix metro for both surgical hair restoration and non-surgical treatments. To begin, schedule a virtual consultation at (520) 290-5555 or through the booking form on this page. Because Dr. Keene performs one surgical case per day, procedure scheduling has some lead time; beginning with a virtual consultation early gives you more flexibility in scheduling.
